Oh my gosh Kolina, this makes me want to read this book immediately. I've looked it up on various sites and it's funny to see it have a 3.15/5 stars on Goodreads. Reading the 2-star reviews down below of all the people who clearly felt the book hit a little too home for them is, well, interesting, to say the least. I've subscribed to her.
You will not regret subscribing to her! She's just got such a good eye for internet culture and her book is a a perfect example of that. I know, the reviews are whack. Satire isn't for everyone! I just wonder if they knew it was satire, with comments like "it's all so cliched" lol. I suspect those who disliked it felt like you said -- it hit a little too close to home. Which is another indicator of the brilliance of the book.
I would love to see someone write a post about the "meaning" of Goodreads ratings haha! I tend to find that my favourite reads have 3.8 or 3.9 stars (but usually not more than that). It's weird!
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! I think Goodreads has gotten so convoluted. And my guess is that your favorites having lower ratings is because they’re more cerebral or reviewers aren’t understanding them as intended. Like Self Care for example!
Wow, what a review! And I love what she's doing over on Instagram with the satire. The way you described it reminds me of Kiley Reid's recent release, Come and Get it. I can't remember if you've read that one, but I think you'd enjoy it based on what you shared about Self Care!
I have read Come and Get It! I didn’t make that same connection but I definitely see what you’re saying. They’re both super sharp and have an extreme understanding of the worlds they’re depicting.
