You know, in a big city as Rome that is full of tourists every day it can happen. I don't think this would happen in other minor city. When my partner and I went to Rome some years ago, we went into a souvenir shop and the shop assistant asked us a question in English because my partner's beard is brown/red so the guy thought he was Irish! This is awkward!
On one side, and I can speak for myself, maybe the intention is to make you at ease trying to speak your language. But of course in her perspective I understand that it was painful 😔 and it opens again her wound about her place in the world.
Well her Italian was completely understandable and correct, I read she was helped in correction of grammar and better use of words/sentences. Italian is not easy and I think she is making a great job and her willingness to learn it is admirable!
