Catherine Newman gives a great interview about Sandwich on The Book Case podcast. Father/daughter host duo who has also gone to the same beach house for decades made it seem like 'just the thing' (as my grandmother would say). https://open.spotify.com/episode/2jU8QL4yQRjXiuBLTRgdQt?si=667c1c2797854937
Oooh both of these are on my list! I was so happy to see the e-book for Sandwich was on sale so I didnāt hesitate. So cool that your neighbor was able to help you read those books sooner āŗļø
Hah it wasnāt an intentional library gaming scheme, but it worked in my favor and nobody got hurt.
Iām going to check out that article. Iām having a hard time getting into some of her essays, but others are really captivating me. Thanks for the link! And good luck with your friendās ARC!
Loved both of these!! Sandwich particularly hit me - it's so heartfelt and genuine, funny and insightful. I will read anything Catherine Newman writes!!! <3
This was my first book by her and now I want to read only Catherine Newman from now on! š¤£š¤£š¤£ Such a wonderful book and so touching. The way Rocky loves those kids is just amazing. I loved the book so much!
+1 for We All Want Impossible Things. She gets how even the gravest (ugh! the pun) times are also absurd and may call for laughter of the nervous and/exhausted variety.
Oooh, well The Wedding People has been hovering about in my Amazon basket for the last few weeks just WAITING for me to bite the bullet and order it. Sandwich is a new one...but with that description? Count me IN.
I have to admit, I am such a poor library goer (despite fully believing it its qualities and purpose). I like always having the option to keep and lend out my favourite books so I instead loiter on eBay/in charity shops/on WOB...
I didnāt get into the library until I started bringing my kids!! Now when I hear about a new book I want, if itās not something I think Iāll want to study and underline for writing purposes, Iāll request it from the library. Otherwise I just buy everything! I think this is your sign to buy both! And do tell me what you think afterward. Be prepared to laugh and cry (both out loud).
I loved this, as someone who is currently also hold # 1000 for both of these books. Also...it sounds like your friend might be a master library borrower with a magical ability to snag the most popular books early... teach me your ways, Kolina's friend!
I had the same thought! How did she get these two books so quickly? Iāll ask her how she finds out about new books, Iām curious now! Wish you lived in MN and I could lend you her books (I still have them, they arenāt due until next week!)
Let me know when you do end up reading them because they are FAB and you will love them!
I inhaled Sandwich over a weekend! I couldn't put it down (after waiting a gazillion weeks for it to come to the library; I so would have sublet a friend's library, given the option). I like the sound of The Wedding People, will put an order in for that one next!
I fully support this library strategy, intentional or not š
Bahahah thank you for your support! I will have you all know, the books were returned before their due date š¤š¤£

Adding The Wedding People to my list!
Oooh! I just added it to my playlist, thank you!!

Ohh yay! So glad you found it on sale! I know, Iām so lucky I got ahead of everyone! š
Hi Kolina, that's an interesting way to game the library system, I'm in the 200s for Intermezzo and All Fours. I'll add these two my hold list.
Slouching is classic and your post reminded me of the first essay. One of the Millers wrote about it a couple years ago in the LA Times - https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2022-01-23/joan-didion-some-dreamers-golden-dream-lucille-miller-california
This week I'm reading an ARC of a friend's book. I'm supposed to write a review for a lit mag on this. We'll see how it goes. Have a great week!

Oh gosh, you have to read We All Want Impossible Things! That was my favorite book of that year!
Okay! I am ON IT!!

I support the buddy sharing of library books, especially with what fast readers you are! I read both of these books this summer and loved both. Enjoyed your take and fave lines! (Sandwich, especially, has SO many good ones)š©·āØļø
