Thanks for this guide! I subscribe to many of the mentioned BookStack accounts and have grown so much as a reader from reading & commenting on the posts. My TBR list is too long for my lifetime…but no complaints. 😊📚💕
I've grown so much as a reader from all of them, too! I feel like I'm getting an English degree just from being active on Substack. And same problem with my TBR too, it's almost stressful! But whenever I feel stressed I'm like, this is a great problem to have.
What a fantastic guide—I’m so honoured to be included in this wonderful roundup. You’ve summarized this space so well; such a testament to all the amazing, varied contributions that make this bookish corner so inspiring 🥰
I am not sure if I should kiss you or curse you for this fabulous guide! ;) I do have to work occasionally you know.
I also want to shout out for Renee’s substack of It’s Book Talk & More. She is great at engaging her readers while she shares her opinions of writers & books. Love her stack.
Thank you so much for this! I’m thrilled to be in the list. And I’m also thrilled to find a handful of new Stacks to follow 😍 this book community is like nothing else. Cheers!
I am really laughing that the first word you chose to describe my reviews was long because that is... so correct. The day I manage to fit all my thoughts and feelings about a book into a concise few sentences will be a very odd day indeed - one I don't wish to arrive! Honoured to be included here, particularly being sandwiched between icons Sara & Traci. Thank you Kolina!
Long live the book community we have all found on here. We take our love for books to the next level and I enjoy being a part of it every single day!
Here are some recommendations for contemporary French fiction, although I do not know your taste in literature at all ... Do you read in French? In case you don't, I also add the English title.
- Delphine de Vigan, Rien ne s'oppose à la nuir (Nothing holds back the night).
It's a book about the author's mother who committed suicide, a search for who this person really was. Had very good reviews and I liked it very much
- Hervé le Tellier, L'anomalie (The Anomaly). A thriller, a bit surreal but a great read, won the Prix Goncourt, the most prestigious French prize for fiction in 2020
- Karine Tuil, Les choses humaines.( I cannot find the English title.) Portrayal of French society, a case of rape in an upper class setting.
- Michel Houellebecq, Soumission (Submission). Houellebecq is one of the most outspoken French intellectuals. This political novel was much discussed in many European countries.
Do you like short stories? Then check out Anne Serre (one of her novels is now on the list for the Booker prize).
Now I realize that I have so many books from Europe that I could recommend - I think I'll start a Substack on that. Thank you for inspiring me!
I don't know if you saw but people have been getting louder on notes and demanding just a simple Books post-category by Substack... which would make it easier for people to find us. But until then... we will continue to need posts like these so we can find our people.

Kolina, what a wonderful guide! And what an honor to be mentioned among so many talented writers. Thank you! 💗

This is amazing! I don’t read in French but I love books in translation.
If you do start a Substack about books from Europe, please let me know! Thank you so much for this amazing list.
